Sylvester are delighted to be the lead school for the Knowsley Central Ogden Trust Schools Partnership. We are a partnership of 20 local schools who are working closely together to enhance physics teaching and learning, inspiring our pupils to become involved in STEM careers. This year we have held many events to promote physics and STEM careers in partnership with The Ogden Trust.
In November, our whole school Science Day focused on smashing stereotypes of who a scientist is, with each year group from Nursery to Year 6 investigating different STEM careers. We have our fantastic STEM Careers display showing all our wonderful ideas, plus our STEM Careers of the Month section showcasing even more wonderful roles that children may like to find out more about.
We held our very own design a logo competition and had amazing entries from all our partnership schools. The winning logo was created by Daniel in Blacklow Brow School and can be seen at all our events. Congratulations to Daniel!
The Ogden Trust have provided funding allowing us to run free My Science Clubs afterschool. In Autumn Year 3 and Year 5 carried out lots of exciting sound investigations. In the Spring Term Year 1 and Year 2 children have loved taking part in our pushes and pulls sessions, learning all about forces!
We have created incredible mobile physics libraries to share with our partnership schools. These contain and amazing selection of fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our physics curriculum. Children in Sylvester loved using the books to support their Science lessons and were able to use them as reading for pleasure books too. Year 3 particularly loved the book Interstellar Cinderella!
This year, Year 3 have partnered with a charity called 4wardfutures to take part in a project called WATMO (What Are Things Made Of). To launch the project, 4ward futures delivered a workshop to teach children all about galaxies, red stars and blue stars. This was led by the amazing scientists Dr Alex Hill from the University of Liverpool and Jamie Salcido Negrete from Liverpool John Moores University. Following the workshop, children were able to meet Laura and Tom, two brilliant engineers working on spacecraft and the use of artificial intelligence in space during a virtual webinar.
Children then created their galaxy inspired art work and were thrilled to have their work displayed their work alongside Roby Park Primary School at The Culture Hub in Huyton Library.
At the end our of project, 4wardfutures created an amazing virtual gallery to display our work. https://4fvirtual.org.uk/watmo/
