Welcome to Year 4! Across the academic year 2024/2025, Mr Musker, Mrs Welsh & Mr Hodgson will be leading the children through an exciting, enjoyable educational journey. Below is some key information for parents and children regarding the autumn curriculum and our routines. For more indepth information about the autumn curriculum please refer to the Autumn Topic Overviews on this page. As we enter the spring and summer terms, the Year 4 topic overviews for those terms will appear on this page also.
Reading: This year your child will be doing lots of reading in school but we also need your help to boost your child’s reading. Each week, your child will bring a reading book home to practise with you. Once they have finished the book send it back and we will then send a new book home the following day. Furthermore, Sylvester have invested heavily in a fun, interactive learning resource called Reading Eggs. Your child has login details and can access this at home. Please encourage them to do so as they will really benefit from this resource. Contact the school if your child doesn’t know their login details please.
Spellings: Each Monday, your child will bring home their spellings. We would like your child to learn their spellings each night before they are tested on a Friday. Your child needs to return their spellings to school each Friday or you could send a photo of the completed spellings on Class Dojo.
Topics: Our topics this autumn are India and Ancient Egypt. During our topic on India, the children will be finding out all about the geography and culture of India. We will be studying Indian cities, landmarks, rivers, mountains and climates. We will also be comparing life in an Indian village to our own lives. Our English lessons will link into this theme as we will be studying two books set in India (Cinnamon and Cloud Tea Monkeys). During our topic on Ancient Egypt, Year 4 will be studying what life was like at the time of the pharaohs. Our English lessons will once again link into this theme as we will be studying two books based upon Ancient Egypt (Who Built The Pyramids? and The Story of Tutankhamun). Our Maths topics this term are: Place Value, Calculation Methods, Problem Solving and 2D and 3D Shape. Our Science topics this term are Electricity and States of Matter. This term we will also be studying drawing and painting techniques in Art and we will be designing our own biscuit recipes in DT. Yummy!
PE: Your child will have a PE lesson on a Monday and a Thursday. We would like your child to attend school, on these days, in their school PE kit.
Homework:
Spellings – These will be sent home each Monday and the children will be tested on a Friday.
Reading – Each week, your child will bring home a new reading book which is to be returned once it is finished.
Weekends - Each Friday, your child will be set a piece of homework (Maths or English). Some of the homework set will online (Reading Eggs or MyMaths).
